A Very Nexus Reception

To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.

Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.

For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.

As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Greetings

Food and Drink

Music and Dancing

Bonfire Entertainment

Party Games

It's a problem that solves itself, since Felix has caught all that smiling and hugging and if nothing else Jim is having fun without him. With a woman Felix only recalls by sight, in fact, but with whom Jim is clearly very comfortable. Time to investigate! But he brings drinks.

"Brandy, anyone? The doctor tells me this is actually passable, so it must be good." He has glasses to offer both of them, but he pauses when he sees Jim and decides against handing him one. "I'm not butting in, am I?"

"Temporary, yes. Depending on who you ride against, we may need to change it a few times. But I'm certain the Ghosts can restore it to its original state when you finish." Perhaps it's a little arrogant, but Tarana's confident this is one of the less complex tasks they've performed.

With that in mind, she points them over to the side of the field. The Hunter nearby has moved on to setting out reinforced chestpieces and helms, inspecting those the squires bring over from their own stores. Those will need to be adjusted to actually fit their temporary bearers, too, but they'll find something to suit Sulu, be it space soldier or medieval knight.

She'd grin ear-to-ear if she could. Blaze claps her hands and then points to the Hunter over by the Sparrows. The woman in her light space armor and cloak is smaller than Blaze, much closer to Dia's size. Her little Ghost is zipping between would-be contestants and the armor pieces she's laying out, blue eye flitting this way and that.

"I bet Turnstone's got something that'll fit you. Ghosts are really good at making adjustments on the fly. You wouldn't believe how often I've scrounged new gear from some ancient cache and mine's had to fix it. Come on, I'll introduce you!"

Problems that solve themselves are the problems with the best solutions!

Or something like that anyway.

Truthfully, it's something Delia's wanted to do anyway, hanging out, shooting the shit, getting a little buzzed? That's certainly something she can get behind.

Delia takes a glass and shifts her weight, smiling as Felix arrives. Whether or not he's met the Orion woman, she's certainly a distinct sight: Standing at about five foot five in the shoes she's wearing at the moment, Delia's a curvy, humanoid woman with deep green skin. She wears an eye patch over her right eye, with a deep, but faded scar across it. Her hair is shoulder length, and a sort of deep black-green color. Her good eye is a bright blue. Currently, she's wearing a rather basic, but nice black dress and low heels.

"How to describe it..." Delia muses in thought for a moment, "I'm from an alternate version of his world, and further along in the timeline. I can't remember if we've met before offhand, but I'm Delia Battista, a pleasure to meet you officially, Felix."

"I suppose that makes some sense." Over the past few years, Dia's had to make ...adjustsments to clothing she's acquired over time, particularly after her exile. "Alright, let's see how this goes."

Dia starts in Turnstone's direction, if nothing else, this whole thing's got her curious, at least.

“Yeah, I inadvertently found myself busting her out of jail, if you can believe that.”

Han said. He had also watched the Princess stride away with her head held high. Though it had nothing to do with the fact that he wanted to make sure she was out of earshot and everything to do with the fact that he admired the view. When she turned away, of course, is when Han is most often caught staring at Leia. Because he didn’t mind so much that other people could catch him admiring her as long as her Highness didn’t notice.

“She’s been acting like she’s the boss of me ever since.”

Thor just nods, leaning back in his chair and topping up his glass as he looks contemplatively at the hammer. He's not quite sober enough to speculate too deeply on the implications of what it might mean if Tamrielic magic can overcome the Odinforce, but not knowing if it'll work at all makes him nervous. Maybe it's a little petty of him to worry about such things, but knowing that he's still worthy to lift Mjolnir despite his failures means more than he can articulate even when he's not drunk.

But dammit, now he kind of needs to know too. This'll haunt him forever otherwise.

He waves a little to the newcomer, a stranger he's seen in passing here and there, but nothing more. "A test of magic," he says, summoning his usual bluster with the ease of the inebriated, and probably booming a little louder than is really called for. "A hammer enchanted so that only the worthy may lift it!"

It's all a matter of grace and panache and infinitely flexible limbs, Han! He says something rather agreeable about the brandy and whisks a clean glass from the other counter.

Setting it upright on the bar and safely opening the brandy takes some concentration, or maybe Bob's just lost in thought for a second. He doesn't relax until the brandy's glugging safely into the glass (hopefully Han's fine with a lot of it).

So how's the family, Han? He's full of inquisitiveness as he passes the brimming glass to Han and leaves the bottle- er, throws the bottle across the room. Oops. He'll get that in a minute.

They're an odd pair, plant and machine matching steps and jerking motions. But after a few rounds Groot's clearly got the hang of it. Blaze breaks her rigid act to clap and whoop as the music ends.

"Hey, you've got a knack for this! Oh, Ghost, get 'em to play something faster. I want to show him the Sunbreakers' dance!" Ghost obligingly darts away to the sound system, though not without a little shake of his shell. Can't complain if his Guardian;s having fun. (Besides, he can kind of dance along with this one.)

The Exo winks at her newfound dancing partner as the beat kicks in heavier. "Okay, ready to try another one? This one's a battle dance!"

She'll go a bit slower at first to show him, but it's a dance to throw yourself into. Her version's extra stompy, Blaze having the opinion that if you hit the ground it damn well ought to notice.

Ok, it's very satisfying to get that kind of reaction from someone. Isidor's grin, however, wavers at the sight of the horses treading the ground anxiously at her steed who, thankfully, remains calm and attentive.

Her head snaps back round to the squire at his question. The stammering gets another quirked grin. At this point she's more than used to being mistaken for nobility. Her family is rich, old, and well established enough to blend in beautifully with lords, viscounts, dukes and all the rest.

"Isidor Durant. Just Isidor Durant."

Star Fleet, that sounds Official. Rocket's never been much for those sorts of things, himself. They want people to follow rules and blah blah something private property, yadda yadda. Besides, even just an implication of somebody owning him makes his fur stand on end. Nope, better the privateer life, thanks very much.

"You bet your ass it does," he answers proudly. "All over the galaxy. The Benatar's a great little ship. 'course, I'm the captain." He's not, not really, but six months of de facto ownership means it might as well be.

[personal profile] ididntasktogetmade 2020-01-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
For reasons Viatorus won't understand, the word choice makes Rocket laugh out loud. More of a hearty chuckle, perhaps. "Yeah, guess you could say that. He's... he's my kid." He trusts most people are smart enough to figure out by themselves that they're not actually related, and also that it doesn't matter as far as Rocket is concerned.

[personal profile] ididntasktogetmade 2020-01-02 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I am Groot!" Yes, faster! Groot is all for this. Quill is a fan of slow songs so he can sway with Gamora - or he was, anyway, now they just seem to make him sad - but Groot wants to feel the rhythm and let it come out his arms and legs. He watches with mouth agape at her footwork, those big lantern eyes getting even wider as she shuffles from side to side more fluidly than he would have expected. And the stomping! He can really feel the dance floor shake when she slams her boots down, like a very enthusiastic earthquake.

It's going to take him a few minutes to get it right though. There's so much movement! And his legs probably aren't properly grown for the full extent of it, but he does a little tweaking of his frame, lengthening the joints just enough so they have younger, supple wood at their cores. There, now he can bend better!

"I've never been to a wedding," he says with a grin and a shrug. "Pretty sure where I come from people just hire catering companies."

Danny has been doing some teaching of himself, in the meantime. He's not been bereft of magical influences. He's spent time in Hermione's world, exchanged emails with Horvath, and made friends with Penninah. He's in a weird position, maybe, out of step with the rest of the people here thanks to being young, and alone, and unsupervised. It's still a vast improvement over where he came from.

Talk of a demonstration makes him perk up, looking from Felix to Jim hopefully. "Hey, if there's anything I can do to help, count me in."

Wow, and here he thought a wedding reception might be boring!

So this is the human mage. Rondo is studying him, mild and polite, but beneath the facade he's analyzing, observing the details of his behavior, the flux of his energy, utterly curious. The concept still seems wrong to him on a deep, visceral level, but he's learning to tame his tongue after that chat with Jim, and he's prepared to do more listening than talking.

"Ah! I'm sorry, I'm Rondo dan Olorthavaas," he says, and returns the bow, though the way he moves is tight and reserved rather than sweeping, a light bend at the waist. He offers an armclasp then, though. Significantly shorter than Felix, he'll have to reach up, but his grip is firm. "A pleasure to meet you."

Battlemage? His brows crease a little at that title, which is foreign to the point of striking him as bizarre. "We...don't have those where I'm from. Is it...um. A dangerous profession?"

A unified planetary government means that wars within Arraka'ar itself are few and far between since the Revolution. Civil unrest is always possible, but there's been nothing serious within Rondo's lifetime, which means the military is entirely devoted to defense of the planet and its colonies. There are mages in the military just the same as there are in most other professions, but they would be force-mages, elementalists, maybe healers, and would bear the same ranks as their nonmagical counterparts.

The familiar darting past visibly distracts him, and he blinks after it for a moment. There will be Questions later. Especially when he gets a better look at it, because like many of his kind, he's frightened of dogs.

"...um." What was he about to say? "Oh! Yes! Well, traditionally every elf gets a lantern as a birth gift. It's symbolic. And then you light the twin lantern from yours and your partner's, when you wed, and hang it on the wall of the home with the rest of the family lights. Desert elves are more adherent; most of the people I know just light theirs on holidays, but either way it's a symbol of your life, and sharing it with another person."

"I assume you don't have your own birth lanterns, but...well, you can adapt it." He was careful to get a lantern without holy symbols for them, and with a more human-influenced design. A real traditionalist would be horrified.

He smiles when Jim appears, a little relieved even if it does mean there are two people looming over him now. "You're welcome! I hadn't been in the Nexus in a while anyway--oh, wow, I bet I look different this time around, don't I?"

It hadn't occurred to him until now that Jim hasn't even seen him properly yet.

Well this just gets more and more exciting. Runa bounces once on the spot, grinning from Felix to Jim. "We could definitely do it! I'm great at pretending I'm allowed in places I'm not."

The scholar is already a little distracted. "Do you bungee jump, Jim?"

He doesn't know why else anyone would jump from somewhere high. Especially when you don't have air magic.

Considering the obvious species difference, and the way Rocket talks about him, it seemed like the logical conclusion. Which is why the laughter confuses him, but then Rocket is agreeing with him before he has time to get anxious.

"Have you been caring for him for long? Runa and I have only been married a year." With a pause and then a shrug he corrects, "A year and a half."

“I don’t believe we have snowberries,” Loki says, petting Sigrid’s hair as the kids prepare to scamper off. “But I have yet to find anything sweet and fruity they don’t like. Don’t let Ein make himself sick, all right?”

The girls have brakes and won’t over-indulge past the point of an intense sugar high. A toddler will.

He watches to make sure he sees where the children go, and there’s a possibility he’ll be sending an illusion out to keep an eye on them later, but for the moment everyone seems to be comfortable in the party crowd.

He’s pleased by the reaction to his gifts, watching the light dawn on first Felix and then Jim with a slow, impish smile. “Oh, don’t worry, I don’t feel guilty about it. It was an unintended consequence, mind you, but—well, all’s well that ends well.”

He can’t help but find the story funny, in retrospect. “If you wanted, I could certainly enchant them against fire or water to increase their durability, but I imagined you could get those kinds of protections in Felix’s world, as well, so I left them as is. Congratulations on your nuptials.”
