A Very Nexus Reception
To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.
Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.
For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.
As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….
Greetings

That's all she'll say on that, for the sake of her pride and her stubbornness.
"It's good to see you too," she tells him softly. She does mean it. Jim is possibly the closest friend she has after Harrowheart. As for the mention of the gifts, though, she smirks. "When I asked the Archon for permission to make those books for you it was him who suggested we include his latest writings. He might as well have said he likes you out loud. You must have made quite the impression."
Then she hesitates. "Why would it be the only chance you'd get for a while? We can arrange to meet for coffee, you know."

"And here I thought he didn't much care for a man without magic presuming to know anything. Or having another man for a partner." He remembers the sour looks he got from that all right. But there had been legitimate conversation so far as Jim's personal research was concerned. Perhaps conversation at all is something he should count himself lucky to have had. It must have worked out enough in his favor, either way. "You can be sure the Durants will be getting a copy of my journals once I've made headway."
Her offer startles Jim visibly from his thoughts. This time, that bright smile is all for Isidor.
"It wouldn't be too much trouble? Here I thought because I was back on the ship it meant no more sparring, and what with both of our work schedules..." He sighs, but in truth with the wedding finally done and settled both he and Felix will have so very much more free time at their disposal. "We'll have to make the time then. I've missed our stress venting sessions."
Getting his ass handed to him, he means.
"I'll warn you, I have been training in the last year."

Isidor smiles as sweetly as she can in return. "I'll warn you, I've got more people whose asses I want to kick but can't."
"We'll make the time. It's a little easier for me currently. Runa is taking on more of my duties to Viatorus whether I like it or not." And her mother is so eager for her to set things up so that she can focus on raising a few little-Durants. Another thing Jim will have to help her vent about. "Do you even get time off when you're on your ship?"
no subject
"A Durant family trait you haven't inherited entirely, I'm pleased to see." Sarcasm and anger are feelings too. Without them, how could Jim and Isidor engage in half of their favorite activities? Snarking alone is only so fun and Felix hasn't had to hardly worry about a paper cut on the captain for months now.
"Quarterly reviews are happening right now and building up while I'm here. You're talking to the one other person in the Nexus who gets having hundreds of people underneath them to keep order of." But Jim nods too. It's best not to reach out and prod any of those pressure points here or now. She's got them and so does he. Half-heartedly competing over work stress is by comparison much safer waters. Jim's competitive streak is still alive and well.
"Soon as those are over, I'll be able to breathe easily again. A week or two tops. Mission's been quiet these last few weeks. Not much out of the ordinary in this corner of uncharted space for the moment." But the less said about that the better for her, Jim figures. "Sure I do. PINpoint means that I can do almost whatever I want with my time off shift so long as I show up if one of my department heads pings me. There's always the paperwork but you know already I'll rearrange my schedule easily enough. Less easy for me to invite you over anywhere that isn't moving at warp unless it's the Nexus, but I'm not adverse to meeting you someplace for a change so long as you're prepared to stop me from making a fool of myself in 'Modern' Earth too badly."
Doing alright at the Durant parties doesn't seem like it should count, really.

Between work, clients, family and the Asgardians Runa invited into her world, her list of people to stress over is growing. Unlike Jim, though, none of them are at risk of anything more than a little discomfort. She folds her arms. "You know, I'd love to see what kind of metrics a futuristic, space-faring humanity is using. I might come away with something helpful."
If only she could handle the weird gravity of wandering about his universe...
The comment about saving him from making a fool of himself gets a smirk. "No promises, but I'll see what I can do. I feel like you'd be more comfortable with the technomages of my world, but they're not overly fond of Durant-types. There's plenty of other things to see, anyway. Maybe a drink on a private beach somewhere." She eyes him. "Better yet, sparring on a private beach somewhere."
no subject
"You want me to walk you through one of my reviews." It's not quite a question because Jim knows how seriously Isidor takes her work. His roll of the eyes is accompanied by a smile and a snort rather than anything negative. He'll consider it but there's much more entertaining avenues for them to pursue if they're going to be making time to hang out.
"Those aren't mutually exclusive?" Now Jim's looking curious in a way that spells trouble for most people who know Jim Kirk. He's got an idea thunking up in that head of his. "I sort of thought they would be given how traditional your family seems, and well. All of Nirn." Iiiinteresting. Very much so.
The smile he flashes Isidor's way is full of teeth. Ready and raring to meet her challenge.
"Sparring on a private beach and then enjoying drinks after. I like the way you think." He's pretty sure he'll need it after he gets his ass handed to him but there's no fun if he tells Isidor he thinks that way. Her ego's large enough. Besides, one of these days he might surprise her. Unlikely, but not impossible.

"I wouldn't say no, if it didn't violate any terms of contract on your end." She holds his gaze, amusement in the corners of her eyes and at the edges of her mouth. Jim had better be careful what he suggests, as much as what he promises. It might be dreary to most, but Isidor would take him up on that offer.
"The Russians and Japanese are firmly established in those areas and not quite as open as my family in sharing their knowledge. Nor are the older European families particularly interested in it, for the most part." She huffs a laugh, then shrugs. "But I'm told it's quite as amazing as any other form of magic."
The way he welcomes the idea has Isidor settling into her grin. It's not cheeky this time, but content. After everything they've been through, and the things that have happened recently, it's a relief to see a friend so happy at the idea of spending time with her, despite her unusual methods for relaxing.
"Good. Then I'll arrange a date and a time."

It's hard to fight alongside someone, stand side by side with them in their troubles, and accept a hand up from someone after they've wiped the floor with you and not either turn out to be very good friends or very close rivals.
"I remember meeting so many culturally diverse people at the Durant parties. It hadn't occurred to me that they wouldn't all be tied into your family in some way. And I suppose most of them were European in descent on both occasions." Those are fond memories. Jim's learned so very much from his limited time spent amid Isidor's family and not all of it he learned from the Durants.
"It'll be a welcome break from work and my own studies. I'm pretty sure the minute I get my nose into those gifts you left for us I'll be up to my elbows in magical theory observation with most of my spare time. It's taken a backseat for long enough."
no subject
She smirks, raising an eyebrow and shrugging. "Welcome to the siloed nature of magical alliances. There are some barriers that even my family are still working on getting through."
"Mm, just as long as you let me in on what you find. I don't get to study like you and Viatorus. The least I can get is priority in hearing your discoveries."
no subject
Being laughably wrong about something that might be very simple to a mage risks far too much of Jim's pride for him to handle. It won't snuff out the mischievous twinkle in his eye though.
"I'm...just now learning about those, myself. Having actual magical alliances I'm sworn to honor as though they were my own, I mean. Though Nirn's politics aren't quite the same, obviously." They wouldn't try to stop him from continuing his own research, Jim thinks. Hopes, really. For all the joy and honor joining the Caelus family has brought this captain from another realm Jim's only just now beginning to realize there are expectations he'll need to talk to Felix about observing.
"...You could help me study and get input on the research first hand?" They make the time to vent stress, Jim's more than willing to make time to let Isidor indulge in a different hobby. Especially one that might further his own research. "And before you ask--not in space. I've got a house on Earth. It's trickier to arrange time there unseen, but not...impossible." Jim would love to say nothing's impossible for him but he's been put in his place enough to check That hubris at the door.

It makes sense that after knowing her all this time Jim would know how to get her attention. Behind her careful expression, her eyes light up. Research on another Earth? With a friend? Free of Durant rules and in a way she can pitch to her father? It sounds too perfect.
Isidor has to take a minute to restrain herself, but a sly smile peeks out despite her composure. "I'm sure I could carve out time in my schedule to help a friend."
no subject
"At least you'll know better than to set off the fire alarms in the house." His grin is downright criminal. "We're still working on Felix's grasp of technology."
no subject
"Well you know I'm curious to see what you're up to. Let me know when you start up your research again, but for now... Why don't you let me get you a drink? What's your poison tonight?"
no subject
Besides. Isidor's offering and she's always got herself under control even when things go to hell. Jim flashes her a boyish grin before nodding over to the bar.
"I feel like I should take the opportunity to get you to try something from my world. Where else are you going to get the chance to try an Andorian ale?"
