A Very Nexus Reception
To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.
Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.
For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.
As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Re: Greetings
Leia was warm enough to shrug out of the twice oversized parka Han had lent her and draped it over a chair. She wore a lovely blue velveteen dress and it caught the light in a soft glowing way.Made in the same way as shimmer silks it seemed to run with iridescence depending on how the light caught it. Her hair was piled in long curls and twists with ringlets that fell well down her back. She been on the run for so long that it felt good to actually dress nicely for a change. It had been part of her court life she'd thought she hated, apparently with missing ones home the simplest things acted as reminders.
Leia didn't know the music that was playing, but she stepped closer to listen and watch the others, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and it did her heart good to see it. She smiled and rocked just a little to the music, rhythm it seemed was indeed universal.

And this is the nexus. Who knew what you were going to see around here.
At first all he noticed was a petite woman in a coat that was far too large for her. Comically large on her. She must have been borrowing one from someone else. Then as she shrugged out of the garment he noticed her hair, long, but beautiful pinned up in a couple of parts — not a strand out of place. When she turns, and he can finally see the face of this person, he can feel his heart start to speed up even as he’s standing still.
He knew those brown eyes from anywhere; he had stared into them so many occasion. Vibrant and cunning, but younger than he’d seen them in a long time. She didn’t have the unavoidable droop of age or the wrinkles in the corners that had filled in as his had. He swooned in a way that was entirely unnatural, given that he should have been able to see something like this, and yet it did his cynical heart so much good to take it in.
Wisdom had told him that he ought to stay back and simply enjoy that impossible treat from a distance, but already he was heading to the bar trying to remember what it was that she liked to drink when they met.
—————
“I can’t help but notice that you’re unoccupied and probably thirsty.”
The sound of his own voice never seemed as old as it did to him in that moment — it had gotten a grit with age that was always present, even when he was speaking softly — but it was distinctly his own.
He raises a cold, unopened bottle of cider just slightly, but in offering nonetheless.
no subject
"Oh, thank you." Stunned she accepted the drink, in a bottle? That would be like him but, she found herself staring and felt suddenly very aware that she was.
"I'm sorry you just remind me very much of someone." She shrugged a bit self consciously. "Not that he'd be nice enough to bring me a drink without a fight first." She chuckled and tried to start over with a smile.
"Are you a friend of Captain Kirk?" Asked while she tried to find a way to open the bottle.
no subject
Han says, a few notes softer than he had when he’d walked up to her. Now that he’s able to look at her closely, he can guess how old he might be and that she was likely to be referencing him. Sort of. He hadn’t intended to bring the other one up on approach, but ... he always did love to talk about himself.
Han set his glass down for a moment on the nearest table. His own drink was of a much higher alcohol content and certainly a lot more bitter than a cider would be.
“Sorry. I can open if you like.” He murmurs. “I don’t think I know Kirk, I’m just friends with the bartender.”
The only Captain Kirk he knows is on TV.
no subject
Did she know him somehow? Maybe someone she'd run into with Han, but she couldn't place him exactly. The voice though, that low rumble was, nice. "Please, thanks." Leia handed the bottle back to him and listened when he spoke. Eyes scanning his face.
When it hit her she grabbed the back of the chair beside her. What had Han said? The Nexus is a strange place, Sweetheart. Monsters and magic and aliens of all kids. If you're lucky you might meet more than one of yours truly. A place like this is about the only place that could handle it I guess.
"Han?"
no subject
“Of sorts.” He murmurs. “The pleasure is all mine, really.” He knows who you are, darlin’. No need for introductions.
The twist off cap is easy for him to remove. He has great hand strength and a well calloused palm to get her drink open, but he does seem a little concerned when she reaches for the chair. He suspects she’ll recover quickly enough, but if she looks like she’s gonna get any more wobbly on him he’s ready to put the drink down and ease her to sitting.

Now that she was sure who it was she was on more stable ground, both literally and figuratively. He had grown kind, even nice, she had to wonder if that was just an effect of the years or of life. She didn't find herself almost immediately on the defensive or ready with some smart comment back at him and that was a rare thing.
"Would you care to join me?" That was something she never would have asked of his younger self, but now she extended a hand to the table and smiled.
no subject
“It’s my hair, isn’t it?” As if it wasn’t obvious that what set him apart from the Han she knew was age.
Since she already was posed on the chair, he doesn’t opt to pull it out for her. Though, he probably would have in other circumstances. Instead he simply sits without much ceremony.
no subject
"That's it, the hair. It's shorter." She couldn't seem to keep the smile away, why she felt so immediately at ease with him now was a surprise to her. Not at all unpleasant but still a surprise.
Leia seated herself and sipped at her drink, it was pleasantly crisp but with a bite to it. She decided she liked it. "I suppose this is catching up after so many years, so how are you? Is Chewie here?" Her elbow sat to the table top and propped her chin in it, inclined to listen if he was to talk.
no subject
“I come through by myself.” To call it a vacation would make it seem like he came though for a longer period of time than he actually did, but that was kinda the gist. “Not much to tell about Chewie, he still rarely leaves my side. Although, he got fleas a few weeks ago somehow. We went through a ton of special shampoo.”
His life, probably, was a whole lot more mundane than hers. Considering what he had sussed out about the other guy. A one planet existence would have to be pretty boring, right?
“What about you?” He says, taking a slow sip from his glass. “I remember you being very busy.”
no subject
When she could swallow she laughed, one he'd know from later in their life together when she had actually let her guard down and had been moved by something truly funny. Congratulations old man, you've done more for her in a few minutes than young you had in weeks. Her mood had been lifted completely and her relaxation showed.
"I still am, we're setting up a base on Hoth and Han.. the other Han is helping us get settled in. He still has his business on the side but it wouldn't be fair to expect him to just give that up." Aside form that there was just all the paper work and all the covert meetings to arrange alliances and then trying to find funds... her days usually ended within a few hours of the next one starting up again.
no subject
He’d come home from the Air Force, after serving, with more baggage than he ever expected. He certainly wouldn’t wish that on anyone else.
“Well ...” Han drawled, taking another sip. “... I have to believe working that closely with anyone takes its toll. All the more so during wartime.”
no subject
“I suppose your right.” It had a sort of wisdom to it that her general tendency to snap would overlook. She’d file that away for later and maybe it might save Han some grief at some point.
“And you? You look well, look like you’ve done well for yourself.” Leia wouldn’t have thought the Han she knew had a chance to reach his age with his brash recklessness. But clearly this man had and had learned some along the way. She found, despite who he was, that she liked him. This version of him had the charm with less of the arrogance, some of those rough edges had been worn more smooth.
The music changed and a very energetic song played, she had no idea what it was but it was loud. She moved her chair to better be able to hear him over the rising volume of both music and revelers.

It's his very first time ever allowed off ship to this place between worlds and the ensign would really like to make a good first impression. So when he sees a lady off by herself watching everyone else enjoy themselves he takes a deep breath, squares his shoulders, and...very respectfully yet eagerly approaches her making sure to stay in her line of sight all the while.
"If is not to your liking, you can request a song from either Miss Jaylah or the..band? Whichever is playing." His accent pulls at certain consonants, rounding them out whether he likes them to or not. "I know the one with the stereo, at least. She's happy to change it up."
no subject
“Hmm? Oh no, I am used to learning new cultures by their music. This is fine, perhaps not what I am used to for dancing. But it does seem festive.” Leia stopped swaying and smiled at the new face. The accent was very thick and not at all familiar to her. She’d heard basic tinged with many tongues but this was usual, and so it was something of interest.
Without someone to introduce herself Leia took that task on easily enough. “I’m Leia by the way. Princess Leia of Alderaan, and you are?” She held a hand in greeting, hoping that by issueing her first name first it might soften the effect of her title. Kirk had reacted sharply to it earlier and she hoped to forestall that in others.
no subject
A quick glance around doesn't point out any obvious security watching over her either. Strange, that.
"Is my pleasure, Princess. My name is Pavel Chekov. I am also working on the ship Captain Kirk heads." Ohhhh, handshakes are much more familiar territory. His is just sliiiightly too enthusiastic but at least not an overbearing grip or duration. "Forgive my manners, this is the first time I've ever been allowed to see this Nexus. Though I have heard whispers about it for a while now."
no subject
She gestured around them. "It's quite something isn't it? So you are one of Kirk's officers? I recently met him, he seems like a good captain. Somewhat surprising I thought he'd be more.. brash."
Oh first impressions can be so deceiving.
no subject
Pavel's reply is sheepish, well aware he's the lowest ranking member of the crew here today out of everyone. Well, save perhaps one who's only an Academy Cadet, but it's had not to consider Jaylah as one of their own already.
"I do good work though, in navigation and in engineering!" He's more than ready enough to prove it too, if she won't believe him. "You may call me whichever you wish then, Leia. Am used to both ways. Kirk, the captain, calls me Chekov though if you'd rather." Just let him puff his chest out a bit in pride that a Princess approves of his commanding officer. That's a pretty cool thing.
"He does have a reputation, though in recent years it's becoming more and more for doing the impossible."
no subject
"Pavel then. I am sure you'l rise through the ranks with enthusiasm like that." He had earned his place in the crew and Kirk didn't seem the type to just take on anyone long term.
"What are your aspirations? Would you like to command your own ship one day?"
no subject
"Mine? A ship of my own?" He considers that for only about half a second before shaking his head quickly. "I have seen the paperwork and meetings and responsibilities a Captain has. I want to have free time once in a while. But I'd like to be chief navigator someday. Mayyyybe try for first officer if my best friend ever gets a ship of his own. We work well together. He flies where I tell him!" Laughing, at that. Pavel respects the captain more than anything, but the Enterprise's Helmsman Hikaru Sulu is his closest friend.
"But no! This won't do. I cannot just talk about our ship. Please, would you tell me a bit about yourself? I have manners, am so sorry."
no subject
"I can sympathize with paperwork, it takes up far more of my time than I'd like." She nodded as he continued, her smile growing as he spoke with such clear enthusiasm.
"Your manners are fine, it's good to see such passion for what you do, it means the job is more like a life choice than work." But she supposed she could offer up some conversation of her own. "I am currently traveling with Captain Solo, I don't know if you know him or not. I wish we had pilots and navigators like yourself, good shipmen are hard to find, so we have Solo."
no subject
He tilts his head to the side, eyes wide with his curiosity. Another captain! How exciting.
"I have not met this Captain Solo but if he is good enough to work for a Princess I am sure he'd pass muster with my companions." It doesn't sound like the captain is as Official as any of them are by the way she talks about it though. Maybe a militia man from a colony?
"Is true. We..." The ensign trails off and his smile seems to go with it a moment. "We also have had shortages in the fleet recently. Many tragedies have wiped out whole portions of the fleet and taken out much of higher command. Recruitment efforts have been very high back home, I have heard." Pavel knows how hard it was to restaff their new ship even if he wasn't the one personally responsible for it. "You cannot give up Miss Leia. Plenty of people may want to join your fleet but may just need means to do so."
no subject
Leia nodded, all too well understanding attacks and losses, Alderaan still stung her heart in a way she knew would never fully heal. "I've seen similar things with our Rebellion, we've lost whole worlds, fleets, good people." It pained her more than she could give words to. "But as you say, we cannot stop, what we're trying to do is too important."
no subject
"Is important too to look around at something like this. At the small things that make people happy. Remind yourself the kind of world everyone deserves to live in. Even if not for exploration and research, I would still serve for that alone."
Pavel glances back to where Jaylah has lost her latest musical argument to the
bardslive band that the captain's husband seems to favor."You are here now, Miss Leia. You should have a good time." He turns and nods toward the open area scattered with people enjoying the music. "Do you dance?"
no subject
"I agree, it can remind you what you're fighting for." Leia nodded and smiled over at the party goers, each having fun in their way.
The diminutive princess paused and then smiled broadly at Pavel. "I haven't had the chance in some time, but yes I used to enjoy it."
