A Very Nexus Reception

To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.
Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.
For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.
As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Date: 2019-12-26 11:10 pm (UTC)“I think I understand.” He was being kind to her, which likely meant he knew something about her relative future, and if he’d rather not say then perhaps she’d rather not know. Knowing too much can make you change your mind, rethink decisions. She might not take a change she would have otherwise, she’d given her word to her father and failed in that. Leia wouldn’t let that fear change her decisions now.
“So you still fly? I’m not sure the man I know would ever willingly give it up. I think he loves that ship more than anything in the universe.” In fact she wouldn’t be surprised if he spoke that his ship.

Date: 2019-12-27 12:11 am (UTC)“Got his own ship, huh?” He sounds like he’s not surprised by that fact. “I’d be willing to bet he loves it a lot, but I wouldn’t bet on it being the thing he loves most.”
He smiles just slightly at Leia when he says it. It seemed like too much to say more and they were still young and hard headed. Both of them. But if their futures lines up the way he thinks it does? Well, he knows that there will come a point where the ship isn’t the thing he loves best.

Date: 2019-12-27 12:20 am (UTC)She found herself having a good time in spite of however she had come here, she was glad she had. The drink, the music which had slowed and changed to some soft melodic sort of thing, a bit brassy but very steady with its beat. How was Leia to identify big band as a musical form when it was not part of what she knew?
“Would you be willing to dance with me? It’s been ages and, well I think I’m in the mood.” She turned her hand over and moved it enough that he could take it should he agree. She was smiling and not in the showing a lot of vicious teeth way.

Date: 2019-12-27 12:56 am (UTC)She’ll feel that strong, but gentle hand tug her lightly. Han, who is rising to his feet, offered her a warm (if a bit lopsided) smile. He was once the guy who did what he wanted to do, without thinking much deeper on it and he still had his moments.
“I’m more than happy to accept, Leia.”
He’ll lead her out to somewhere sort of solitary and not all that close to the source of the music. He didn’t know how up for talking she would or wouldn’t want to be, but if his history told him anything, it was possible that they might exchange some words while moving together.
He’s very thoughtful about the placement of his hands and how close he ought to draw her in. He is, perhaps, fractionally more close than he would hold anyone else in this room, but not quite as forward as he would have been with his wife.

Date: 2019-12-27 02:29 am (UTC)They moved a bit apart from the other party goers, still plenty of music but also they could talk and she didn't feel the need to raise her voice.
And..
And he was a surprisingly good dancer. She was a bit taken aback when his steps were fluid enough to make her feel as if it might have been her leading. Surely that was not Solo, it must have been some other life experience this man had. It added to her enjoyment though and she stepped with him, perfectly happy in their proximity and not pushing in.
"I'm glad you agreed, I would have felt a little foolish if you hadn't. I'm not sure why I asked except that it's been a long time and tonight is turning out so much nicer than I'd thought it would."

Date: 2019-12-27 12:50 pm (UTC)“The version of you that I know, she always did throw herself into work.” He says, letting that thought percolate for a moment before adding. “I always admired the way you went to tackle problems head on that most people wanted nothing to do with.”
But, that always takes a toll. Even when you’re as well adjusted and hardworking as Leia Organa. Being this close to him does offer a close view of him. He has his share of wrinkles and his shaggy hair has gone a somewhat distinguished shade of white-gray. What’s absent is the resting frown that she’s used to seeing from the other guy.
“I haven’t danced with anyone in a long time.”

Date: 2019-12-27 01:43 pm (UTC)Odd to hear him speak of another version of her, but that too she thought was to be expected if there was more than one of him. "Some might say too involved in my cause and too head strong." And they might not be wrong, but if she didn't who would? Why should any one follow her leadership if she wasn't just as willing to risk and sacrifice as they were? No, she suspected that being so deeply entrenched in the rebellion would be her life's passion and that might not always make her the easiest person to be around.
Leia look up to him, that was familiar, she always had to with Han. The face was the same, she could see very clearly now this is a Solo who had aged and matured. He didn't assert himself so much and he was begging for a fight. The weathering of his features was natural and suited the personality, it didn't make him less handsome just an aged version of the rugged smuggler she knew now. But he looks...content? Maybe that is the word. Secure. Something.
"Maybe it's something we should both remind ourselves to make time for in the future." Though where she would find time between raids and evacuations and planetary assaults she had no idea.

Date: 2019-12-27 06:19 pm (UTC)At this point, he knows himself well enough know that by default, he’s one of the people who would rather not be involved. Not that he can’t be pushed into it, but he recognizes that it’s something special about her and deserving of praise. “I know that I’ve needed to be spurred on a few times. Even when I know it’s the right thing to do.”
But that was part of the beauty of being with Leia and he recognizes that too. He is made better when she’s in his life and he can’t help hope that someday she’ll be that way too.
When she mentioned dancing more? He cocks a very amused grin because he knows exactly how little the man she calls Han Solo has had a chance to practice. He hadn’t become good at dancing well into being the husband of a prominent politician.
“Make sure you go easy on him, if you ask. I didn’t really learn until my wife had taught me.”

Date: 2019-12-27 09:00 pm (UTC)"I'm sure whomever he marries will have a lot to deal with more pressing than dance lessons." Like how to be a civil human being, how to apologize, how to listen when someone is trying to tell you something... oh the list could go on and on.
Leia followed his steps and glided along, she had been trained to dance as well, and it hadn't been as simple as just lessons. The princess had fought some of the more frivolous aspects of courtly training until she was old enough to understand why it was necessary. Dancing for pleasure as they were now, was rare. More often than not if Leia had been to a lavish ball or gala it had been to get close enough to people to gather or pass information.
Her life had not been the picture of luxury or ease that people so often believed, but now that she thought about it she wouldn't trade a moment of it for anything. Her regret being that it was a fair chance that she would never get to be the sort of parent that she'd had. Leia's life was destined to be alone.

Date: 2019-12-27 10:04 pm (UTC)And she can take that for what it’s worth. He remembered a time where it felt like she was a lot more difficult to get along with. It’s, also, not like he and Leia didn’t argue now — war still got waged between them. It just usually ends up being over a lot quicker then it used to be and their picked their battles more carefully. It’s resulted in a fewer number of explosive arguments, but probably instances of nagging and more subtle passive aggressive behaviors.
And faces being made behind the other’s back. What makes Han a good partner for Leia is that he knows all of her tendencies. It was real easy to trip on each other when they started trying to dance together with the differences in height being a lot of the problem. Now he knows what size stride is comfortable without thinking at all about it. She was as disciplined as he would have expected with her movements and he, if nothing else, was relatively athletic.
“What do you do these days that’s just for you? Even if it’s just a small part of the day?”

Date: 2019-12-27 11:06 pm (UTC)The rebellion had been able to pay him well for his services and looked the other way when his methods were less than scrupulous, war had a way of making ethics flexible. So Han could come and go as he please but with the additional attention he was getting for association with the rebellion it might have put a damper on his side jobs. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that but Han did come through for them more than once when it really mattered, so she endured as best she could.
Her movements were smooth up until he asked her that question, one which made her falter slightly in step. She blinked up at him and found herself uncharacteristically without a response, it took her several moments. “I have meetings and I arrange communications for diplomatic connections. I have to issue orders and raise funds.”

Date: 2019-12-28 12:42 am (UTC)He says, there’s a touch of something in his eyes that hadn’t been there before. Disappointment, a little bit of sadness, maybe both? He has a response ready to go, however, because he half expected that answer.
“I was hoping to get some intel from you. Something I could surprise Leia with the next time I saw her. It didn’t seem ... like a bad intention when I thought about it, but I see that I put you on the spot.”
There. A way out of the awkward conversation that she could easily take if she wanted. After all, it wasn’t his job to convince her that she out to take it easy once in a while.

Date: 2019-12-28 12:54 am (UTC)When had the time time she'd done something not related to her work? Even the ceremony after the destruction of the death star had been a chance to gain allies. She thought back and the last time she could recall feeling safe enough to let her guard down and relax without worrying about what she needed to do to ensure other's safety was before Alderaan was lost.
"I used to like riding, a feeling of freedom and control. Just head out and not really think about where I wanted to end up I could just go where ever I wanted for as long as I wanted. Maybe that was why Han was so attached to the Falcon, a similar sense of freedom. "I enjoyed sailing too. It's been years since I've done any of that without it being some sort of mission."

They keep changing where the power button isThis young lady was in the early phases of getting to know him still and he was jealous of how exiting it was in those days. She didn’t even seem all that fond of him, yet, from what he could tell.
“Those are both good ideas.” He says, in a thoughtful murmur. “I can’t recall the last time I’d asked her to do either.”

Date: 2019-12-28 04:29 pm (UTC)Good for them, her? It was impossible to conjugate potential alternate future pronouns.
"I honestly hadn't thought about those things in years. I used to go to concerts with my father, there would be huge symphonies, or we would watch dancers. I was never quite good enough to do it but my aunts had put me in classes when I was young so I admired those who could." Fond memories, the sort which were transportive, reminding her of a time where life seemed so much simpler, thought she knew now Bail and Breha had both been working hard in their own ways on the peace movement.

Date: 2019-12-28 05:21 pm (UTC)Though the romantic in him hoped that wasn’t so.Han is respectfully quiet while she remembers her family and fully utilizes the opportunity to share with him. He gets the sense that she probably doesn’t have the opportunity to do so very often. Particularly if they were at war wherever she was from.
“I haven’t known you to not be good at very many things.” He says with another fond shrug and a smile. “Or, her, I suppose.”
The music is starting to cue the fact that the song was ending and he wondered his she felt about that. Han was game for another song, but there was a level of strangeness to this that he wouldn’t blame her for struggling with as well.

Date: 2019-12-28 06:02 pm (UTC)She'd devoted so much of her time, especially the last ten years, to learning and preparing that she might have forgotten just why the fight was important on a personal level. It was one thing to fight and appreciate the outcome, and quite another to allow yourself to become a figurehead.
"Necessity I suppose." The song was winding down and the pace seemed to be set for another of the same variety. Leia was happy to continue just one more song. The company was pleasant and it felt good to step outside her position for even a few minutes. "I'd thought tonight would be something else entirely." Instead it became a pleasant reminder of things she missed and things that perhaps she didn't have to anymore.

Date: 2019-12-28 07:08 pm (UTC)Odd that when asked of all the possibilities for the evening her first thought was that. "I didn't know there'd be dancing, not all cultures seem to enjoy it as more than a spectator sport." She'd seen many events where it was a very lovely if dry affair where others just watched couples or groups dance.
"And Captain Kirk seems ice, from what Han had told me I thought he'd be, different." Hard headed, stubborn, never knew when to quit. Frankly she'd thought he might have been talking about himself.

Date: 2019-12-29 01:54 pm (UTC)“I find this place is nice for briefly getting away and that there are people worth meeting.” After a moment, he’ll add ... “Though as you might have noticed it gets a bit weird.”
The dancing is kept civil and respectful. Though there’s certainly a part of him that to do something a little bit wild like dip her or something. He doesn’t want to make this any weirder than it has to be, and now that he knows seeing her her is possible, he can’t help hoping he will again.
“I think we’re starting to see dancing less often where I’m from. I didn’t seem myself doing it much when I was young, either.”

Date: 2019-12-29 04:34 pm (UTC)People worth meeting, that sounded right. It was a shame should couldn't convince some of them to join the rebellion. Kirk seemed like a fine captain and there were others, not jedi but magic users. What allies she could make here if things functioned that way. Still even the change of her mindset after being here could be helpful, to see things she might have once overlooked with new eyes.
"I suppose we'll just have to indulge while we can, then."
