@stoplickingthedamnthing - The first night of many
Date: 2025-04-08 01:38 am (UTC)"What in the name of the Dark Lady?!"
"As I said..." Jim regrets letting his pack open at all. As soon as he does several journals spill out and scatter over the ground. He trails off with a hissed swear and stoops to start scooping them all up. "I don't have any room in my pack for anything else at...at the moment..."
He had to get all of these jigsawed into his pack properly so it'll shut again. Gods. How embarrassing.

Date: 2025-04-09 02:58 am (UTC)Jim hands up a couple of the journals to Gale to free his hands up to grab the rest that had spilled onto the dusty stone. A quick shake and a sharp blow get the worst of the dirt and cobwebs off of them again and the ranger can start shoving them into his pack briskly. Both of the journals he'd handed off to Gale are written in the same elegant script. The penmanship oddly familiar to the sending scroll notes he's received before...
Did Jim write all of these?
"Just a few essentials. I've got my rough topography sketchbook I'll use to make maps of the areas we've been. That one's my field sketches of basic alchemical components to keep an eye out for, so I'll know what to pick and what to leave behind." He rummages through the books he's brought.
"This one is my transcriptions of the Illithid runic text I'm somehow able to read now. Thought perhaps it prudent to write it down and take notes on anything I find in that script in case I can no longer read it when we sort the worm problem. It uh, don't tell Lae'Zel but I've also taken notes on her explanations of Tir'su script in here too. So it's my Languages journal I suppose. Uhm. Oh! And this one's for observations I make on magic or spells I see used while we're out in the field."
"And you need...All of these. On you at all times." Shadowheart deadpans. Jim just looks up at her as if she'd suggested something crazy.
"Oh. Yes. The rest I keep in my trunk at camp." Because he absolutely has more.

Date: 2025-04-13 12:24 am (UTC)"That's amazing!"
"You can't Use the books like that, what's the difference between just leaving them at camp?" Shadowheart muses, but Jim's excitedly gesturing to Gale all the while.
"Gale's just said he can change them back easily. Think of all the space we can save! AND if we find larger tools or equipment that could prove useful for the camp, we might actually be able to drag it back in a smaller state! It's brilliant."

Date: 2025-04-13 01:33 am (UTC)Gale preens under the praise, only deflating slightly at Shadowheart's criticism. "He certainly can still use them as references, we'll just need to get a magnifying glass. He may not even need it, archers have exceptional vision," he retorts. He makes a 'what he said' gesture at Jim, "That, too. We don't all have Karlach's.. carrying capacity."
Karlach, who was intently dancing a jig off to the side with zero interest in the conversation, looks up at the mention of her name. "Wha? Oh, look at the cute itty bitty book!"

Date: 2025-04-14 07:34 pm (UTC)Jim's also got a rather critical eye for random objects that might have value. As much as he does not mind being the team's resident alchemist, he's hardly a professional at it. The more complicated potions and elixirs he prefers to purchase from a professional. And those do not come cheaply.
Their fearless 'leader' has made his way back to his tent and is upending his pack to sort out all of his journals. Since the pack spilled earlier he needs to doublecheck they're all accounted for. He's busy knelt down laying them all out and grabbing a few more from his trunk when Gale happens by....

Date: 2025-04-15 08:12 pm (UTC)Eventually, Gale realizes that standing behind Jim while he's bent over sorting through his books could probably be misconstrued, so he clears his throat and tries to pretend that he hasn't been there for a few minutes already. "You really do have quite the impressive collection! Do you need any assistance?"

Date: 2025-04-17 12:58 am (UTC)It's become clear that Jim also has a habit of scooping up pots of ink anytime they're out and about because he has a good four of them covered and set aside for use. He sits up on his heels at Gale's greeting, twisting to throw a grin over his shoulder at the camp wizard.
"Oh, these? Thank you. If you want to take a look be my guest." He scoots over a bit. "It's usually what I spend my evenings on. Working on one of these."

Date: 2025-04-19 03:49 pm (UTC)"Well, if you insist," Gale answers with a grin. He wastes no time taking the offered seat, always more than ready to get his hands on any books, even and especially someone's notes. "You really have got a considerable collection. I am going to have to magically reduce these for you, else we'll need a horse and cart before much longer." He takes his time flipping through the alchemy notes before placing the journal back where it was, careful not to interfere with the other man's organizational system. "You're being quite meticulous in your note taking, and I feel quite lackadaisical in comparison." He gets his hands on the magical theory notes next, and that's when his interest is really piqued, and he flips with much more deliberation, losing the thread of the conversation in his focus.

Date: 2025-04-23 07:57 pm (UTC)He glances over and notes with a soft startled chuckle that Gale has stopped listening.
"Ah. Don't laugh at that. I've not a shred of talent for magics but it does not mean I don't have a deep respect for the craft or its theory."

Date: 2025-04-29 01:46 am (UTC)Ignore Jim pouting I cackled
Date: 2025-04-30 02:20 am (UTC)But considering he has absolutely zero aptitude for utilizing magic, his academic interest in its theory will have to suffice.
"All I know has been self-taught. Either through research or conversations with magically inclined sorts over the years that I've taken notes on after the fact. It's been an area I've been interested in since I was a boy."

Date: 2025-05-03 07:43 pm (UTC)Jim's gaze falls to his journal briefly and then down to the rest of his books with a chuckle.
"Hasn't stopped me from being fascinated by the theoreticals. I find that many people with the talent to Use magic sometimes miss the more applied uses their craft could have."

Date: 2025-05-06 02:19 am (UTC)Gale laughs, a good natured sound rather than mocking, and cocks his head to the side. "I would love to hear your thoughts on that, truly. Tara and I have done our fair share of spell development together, in fact."
no subject
Date: 2025-05-08 06:11 pm (UTC)It's a grin only widening when Gale confirms he's made his own spells before.
"Fascinating! I'd love to observe if you did any of that here, though I doubt being on the road is any place for spell craftsmanship."

Date: 2025-05-09 08:18 pm (UTC)Every time Jim smiles at him like that, it's like the sun rising after a long night.
"Not ideal circumstances, no, nor do I find myself with too much time to spare. Ah, if you ever meet Tara, you should see her cat flap of displacement! One of our joint endeavors."

Date: 2025-05-10 02:09 pm (UTC)He needs his journal back he's aggressively flipping through it for a clean page to grab up a charcoal to start scrawling a diagram on to illustrate his question.
"How do you account for the instability of having the spell hold for longer than a minute?"

Date: 2025-05-12 02:12 am (UTC)He misses Tara terribly, but Jim's enthusiasm does delight him enough to ease the pain.
