A Very Nexus Reception

To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.
Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.
For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.
As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Date: 2019-12-21 01:40 am (UTC)He leans back in his seat as the young captain examines the hammer, possibly a little closer than is warranted. But he's not that worried. Really. In the years since Odin enchanted the hammer, only two others have ever been worthy to lift it. And despite what his human friends think - or had thought, for those no longer in the realm of the living - being a good person is only one small part of worthiness, as Mjolnir sees it.
Okay, he's a little uncertain. Two in ten years is a lot, really.
But he's not playing for high stakes this time, and he can't help the grin when he sees Kirk pull on the handle and move it precisely nowhere. Oh, he is regretting not having a phone now, because this would be an excellent photo. The look on his face!
Thor laughs out loud and slaps the table. "'s only as heavy as it needs to be."

Date: 2019-12-21 04:16 am (UTC)Magic metal. Why the hell is it always magic that's the answer? If he was a mage like Felix is, maybe magic could also be the solution to fixing it. He's pretty sure he's heard talk of Stratos making things lighter than they ought to be with some spell or another before. He could go ask his brother-in-law for help, but that would mean admitting defeat.
Defeated by a piece of space-magic-metal made by Space Dwarves????? in the heart of a dying star. Did Thor make that part up or did Jim hear it wrong. Everything about that sentence seems wildly implausible And Yet here they are.
Thor watching with a smirk while Jim fails to even budge this hammer. Strongest Avenger, Jim Kirk ain't.
"...Okay. So th'table had different rules than I do." Jim's quiet a suspiciously long time while he squints. "What if I lifted the table?" Could he do that? He could probably at least move it a bit. It's not attached to the floor or anything.

Date: 2019-12-22 04:32 pm (UTC)That was a good day, Ultron notwithstanding.
He tunes back in when Kirk starts muttering to himself though, shaking himself free of the memory and leaning forward again a little, raising his eyebrows. “Why not try, and find out?” he says innocently. It won’t work, of course. Not when it’s a person trying to lift it. Automatons like the hypothetical elevator? Perhaps. Stark and Steve had never had time to test that theory before he’d left, casting their doubts on Vision’s worthiness, if he counted as machine or man. For Thor, he has no doubts on the matter. Vision was no mere machine, and if ever an android could have a soul, Vision did.

Date: 2019-12-23 12:32 am (UTC)"Here, pick up th'drinks so nothing spills." Thor won't need to do that if Jim can't budge the table either but the human is trying to be polite and practical despite the drink in him.
"Right. Okay. Here goes noth--!" Oof! A whole lot of huffing, puffing, and probable sore back muscles in the morning later and the table hasn't so much as twitched. Both Hammer and now table may as well be one cohesive concrete statue so far as Jim is concerned. "Wh...what the fuck?"
He saw Thor carrying it simple as anything. It can only be So Heavy, right? R-right?
"Okay, so what if...what if I found a two-by-four and wedged it under the table leg to make a lever. Still no good? How many things do I have to set up before something autonomously moves that goddamn hammer?"

Date: 2019-12-27 01:19 am (UTC)If the young captain was more sober, that look of wide-eyed scientific contemplation might remind Thor even more strongly of Jane, wrestling with any number of conundrums that she'd encountered when dealing with magic. She'd been quick to accept it as a science she did not understand, but that never did stop her from trying to understand. He sees the same in Kirk now, the gears grinding away as he struggles to outsmart the Allfather's enchantment.
Thor shrugs, a cheeky grin on his face as he takes another long drink from his glass. "You'd be trying a while. My girlfriend - ex-girlfriend, long story - she never got it to move either. She was a star scholar - er, astro... physicist?" It takes him a couple attempts to pronounce the latter coherently. "Lots of math. Didn't help at all."

Date: 2019-12-28 06:04 pm (UTC)"Y-yeah." The important take away from this is that this woman never did figure out how to move the hammer either with just math alone at her disposal. Simple machines won't work then. Levers, pulleys and the like. Would simple spells?
"What if I had m'brother-in-law cast a spell on it to make it lighter...?" Jim Kirk doesn't Only have mathematics on his side to rely on. Just because he doesn't understand how such tools Work isn't going to stop him form at least hypothetically reaching for them.

Date: 2019-12-29 06:26 pm (UTC)Has anyone actually tried magic on Mjolnir since the enchantment?
"You could try," he says slowly, rubbing at his chin and almost tangling his fingers in his beard braids. "That... might work. If th' spell's strong enough. Or... can... undo things?" Though something about that doesn't sound right either. He's a little too drunk to contemplate the logistics of time loops and the fact that the ancient hammer was unchanged the day he'd taken it.

Date: 2019-12-30 08:30 pm (UTC)The hammer actually comes in pretty handy right now as absolutely nothing is budging underneath his unsteady weight.
"Wait...wait here. I'm--I'mma be right back. I'll get him. You'll like him." There's no guarantee of that either, but Stratos Caelus is a good man and as pleased as the grooms are damn near to see this marriage done and settled. If he proves too hard to find Jim will go bother his subordinate Celann to help him hunt the Tribune down.
There's a wager to be settled!

Date: 2019-12-31 12:18 am (UTC)The tribune has a mostly-empty glass of brandy in one hand and a flush in his cheeks; it almost looks as if he's been enjoying himself, Divines forbid.
"What exactly did you want me for, Jim...?"

Date: 2020-01-01 09:01 pm (UTC)But dammit, now he kind of needs to know too. This'll haunt him forever otherwise.
He waves a little to the newcomer, a stranger he's seen in passing here and there, but nothing more. "A test of magic," he says, summoning his usual bluster with the ease of the inebriated, and probably booming a little louder than is really called for. "A hammer enchanted so that only the worthy may lift it!"

Date: 2020-01-02 02:28 pm (UTC)Part of the Tribune's repertoire includes Alteration spells. Jim knows this because every Single Time he and Felix have to do any kind of manual labor Felix laments that he hasn't ever gotten lessons from Stratos in how to make things lighter with that kind of magic.
"Here. What're you drinking? Doesn't matter--you gotta try this. Somebody gave me a bottle an' it's really good." They can't have had very much of it. It's still mostly full! But Jim's going to refill his glass and press it into Stratos' free hand. He will not be a rude host to his brother in law of all people.
Jim
stumbleswalks them through everything he's tried to lift the hammer so far, mostly for Stratos' benefit. He even has Thor pick it up (effortlessly at that) and set it down again so Jim can show Stratos just how immovable it is for the captain."It's..it's gotta be magic. He says no one can lift it an' I'm not building a seven step adjacent level an pulley system right now just to prove him wrong. Math can't fix this alone. I.."Jim sways just a bit before leaning toward Stratos emphatically. "I need your help."

Date: 2020-01-06 09:30 pm (UTC)"Well, that's unexpected," he mutters, though he inclines his head to Thor as Jim introduces them. He can feel magic hanging around the man, a slumbering cloud of potential- even before the name snaps into place. Felix warned him about the gods visiting this place. The twinge of wariness in his expression is followed by a confused look at Jim, pressing a glass back into his hand and carrying right on with the conversation. Of course the captain isn't concerned about this at all. Felix warned him about that, too.
He's here now, though, and frowning as he follows along with Jim's explanation. His very insistent plea for help. Gods, why do both his little brothers know exactly how to make that face?
"I can try and help," he says cautiously, looking back at Thor, then at the hammer thoughtfully. "It will depend on the nature of the enchantment if nothing else. I can alter reality so as to change the intrinsic weight of an object." He sips the drink Jim gave him- is this whiskey? It's surprisingly pleasant for all it burns his throat, and his confidence is somewhat bolstered when he adds, "That much would be easy enough."

Date: 2020-01-08 01:52 am (UTC)He's more than willing to demonstrate his ability to lift Mjolnir when others cannot, a secret thrill bubbling up in him every time the hammer proves to him that he is still worthy. It is an affirmation, a joy, that he may never tire of. A fond smile is on his lips even once he sets it down again, immobile to any hand but his.
He doesn't notice the wary look on the battlemage's face either, curious to see what solutions the man might come up with. What he hears makes him chuckle, raising his own glass to take another drink. "I didn't cast it, so I dunno how it works. Worth a try, I guess." Even to his drunken thoughts, though, it can't possibly be that easy. Thor is strong, yes, but if Mjolnir was truly that heavy, he would have noticed.
He hopes, anyway.

Date: 2020-01-10 04:38 pm (UTC)"If th'hammer's too much to move on it's own, we could try to enchant th'table instead. I can't get that to budge neither and it shouldn't be under the same rules as far as I can figure. Pull it out from under the hammer, or at least pick it up and take the hammer with it."

Date: 2020-01-18 08:15 pm (UTC)If the hammer's enchantment alters its weight based on who grips it, then countering with a feather spell might tip the scales (so to speak) in their favor. It doesn't sound as if anyone's tried that approach, so Stratos feels optimistic. He sips the drink before he leans forward, glancing at Thor for permission before he touches the grip himself, turning his senses to the magic forged into it. "If I may..."
It presses back immediately: the drone of potential, the steady rumble and roil of slumbering power. It's like pressing an ear to a window and hearing thunder roll on the other side. It feels like forever, but it's only a couple seconds before he yanks his hand away, looking startled. It's not what he was meant to be looking at, but to Stratos it was hard to notice anything else.
Which means he's missed some of what Jim was saying. Something about the table...? "Ah. Using telekinesis? I can certainly try. That would be even simpler than a feather spell..."
He steps back and passes his glass to Jim, hands curling into arcane gestures as he cups the air before him. Casting the spell doesn't require two hands, but this way he can charge it into a stronger version, and Stratos assumes he's going to need all the magical muscle he can leverage. A faint orange-red glow appears between his fingers, forming a pale haze before he opens his hands in the direction of Mjolnir. There's a flicker of the same light around the hammer... before it slips off and vanishes harmlessly. Not that easy you don't, kids.
Stratos gives a 'hmh' that doesn't sound at all surprised. "Very well, then..." He's going to try the table instead. This time, at least, the faint glow settles over the wood, limning it in will o' wisp light before the mage gestures, trying to drag it away...

Date: 2020-01-20 03:31 am (UTC)The look on the man's face when he jerks away from the hammer, stunned as a man who's been slapped across the face, provokes a smug bark of laughter out of Thor. He smothers it quickly, of course, but he grins proudly at his old weapon, sitting placidly on the table as though it were nothing more noteworthy than a paperweight.
Everyone at this table knows better than that, of course.
Thor takes a long, seemingly uncaring swig as he watches the mage puzzle through this conundrum. The magic he uses doesn't seem that different from the seidr that the Asgardian knows, nor does the look of determined concentration setting into his brow seem terribly different from Loki tackling some mystical mystery in Asgard's libraries. It's a nostalgic pang that strikes him now, a faraway look seeping into his good eye, coming back to himself only when the table itself begins to shimmer... and goes precisely nowhere, Mjolnir's perch pinning it to the floor as securely as if it was nailed in place there.
And oh, what a relief that is to see. Thor hadn't truly thought that the Allfather's spell could be so easily hoodwinked. But he couldn't help but worry that it would, irrational though it might be.

Date: 2020-01-25 04:28 pm (UTC)Jim knows swears in more languages than Stratos at least are like to think exist (Thor, Jim assumes, has been around the galactic block before being a space knowledgeable magic man/god) but because his brother in law is here, the bad words he's learned of Nirn are the first to be called into play. He can't gesture with his hands full of drink or he would be very rudely toward that innocuous looking hammer. He takes a sip of his own glass instead before setting them both back down on the seemingly immovable table.
The captain of the Enterprise leans forward and rests both palms flat against the table. He's not about to admit defeat yet. Jim's seen horrors from the darkest parts of the galaxy. One magic hammer of all things is not about to stop him.
"Okay. Oh...kay. Maybe. Maybe we're goin' about this th'wrong way. Hammer's magic, an' the table's also magic now he's put it in place with the hammer. We might not be able t'interfere directly with this circuit. It's a...s'a full unit now, yeah? Table under the same enchantment as th'hammer. How do we move either of them? ...Could I beam them somewhere else?"
