To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.

Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.

For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.

As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Greetings

Live music is what Thor's long been used to, but in Asvera it's rather harder to come by, traded for Midgardian radios and televisions and iPods. Not all of the instruments are familiar to him, but the more folk-style tunes appeal to him, and he'll spend at least part of the evening parked close enough to appreciate the songs lending their flavor to the atmosphere.

And oh, there's a familiar face. "Amelia," he calls out with a smile, waving his prosthetic hand at her. "You dance like you fight." That's a compliment, of course.

Amelia's all smiles and bright laughter by the time Thor spots her, spinning away from another hapless partner on the dance floor. She waves back as she approaches, her smile tugging into a grin. Now this is the kind of compliment a rogue lives to hear from her peers.

"Thank you, that's very gracious." She takes a seat next to him and removes her cloak with a relieved exhale. It's definitely time to cool off a bit. "Do I get this compliment from another warrior with dancing prowess? Or from someone who simply appreciates a fine dancer?" Despite her teasing tone, it's a completely earnest question. She's heard many tales of Thor's skills on the field of battle, and a compliment like this one makes her wonder how rounded his skill set is.

His laugh is quieter than it used to be, but he's not faking it today. It's more nostalgic, recalling fond memories that fight back against the pain that came later. "Oh, I can dance. My parents hardly wanted their sons to embarrass the Realm in front of the other Eight at diplomatic events. Loki was always better at it than I, but I'm not too shabby at it. A bit out of practice though."

When was the last time he had reason to dance? Certainly not during his time with the Avengers, though he'd attended parties in Stark Tower. Those were more about drinking and socializing than dancing, which he was also good at, of course. Maybe twenty years back, at the victory celebration after the battle of Harokin? "It's been a while," he says at last, rubbing at his bearded chin.

She's spent enough time with Thor to know the difference between each of his laughs. The ones that hurt. The ones that are forced. The ones that mean something more and yet are trapped behind some need to be perfect or strong in certain situations. That this one is real? It makes her smile warm noticeably. He doesn't need to be loud to be true, and she quickly adjusts to his more quiet demeanor.

"It's not a skill one loses without concerted effort," she tells him with a wink. "Once the rhythm is in the bones, it's impossible to be rid of. It might take a few stretches and a few tries to find it again, but I believe you could show up some of the poor fools I've been stepping over easily."

Grinning, she motions to a group of young men speaking to each other in hushed tones by the group of bards. Several of them have removed their shoes to rub at their feet and a few are gesturing wildly as they talk to one another about their attempts to dance with the rogue. To call them hapless wouldn't be wrong, given their various states of frustration. Amelia seems rather proud of herself as she leans back on her hands and exhales a content sigh.

"Really, you'd think Felix's countrymen would be better equipped to handle someone with spirit like mine." She laughs at her own joke and smiles up at Thor. "I feel like I can't be blamed for their current state nearly as much as they might like to think."

He chuckles a little. “I suppose not. I’m told riding bikes is the same way, but I haven’t learned that yet, so I can’t say how true it is.” Something he’s likely to have plenty of time to do, now. Though maybe Asvera isn’t the best place to learn... better bikes than cars, though. He’s not eager to drive right into the ocean by mistake in front of all his people. Or at all, really.

He follows her gaze, though, and grins at the sight of men who look a bit danced out. “Of course not. They don’t look like they’d last in a ‘dance-off’.” He pronounces that like it’s a concept he’s still not entirely familiar with.

Bikes... Amelia's heard of those before, seen them in passing when she visited versions of Earth or in various locations of the Nexus that are a bit more off the well-trod paths. It takes her a minute to remember what they are, though. Best to find a better comparison. "Maybe riding a horse would be a better comparison for those of us who haven't used bikes?"

Thor says it better than she would, considering it's a brand new concept to her. "Dance off? Are they about to dance out of their clothes? Or at least out of their shoes?" That's certainly not the kind of question someone who's familiar with sex would ask, but that doesn't describe Amelia so here they are.

He rubs at his bearded chin thoughtfully. "Probably. I don't know about you, but I was trained to ride a horse in my sleep." He's only slightly joking. One clear benefit of horses over mechanized travel is dozing off and letting the animal make its way home, isn't it? Not that he ever did it very often, of course.

Of course.

Surprised, Thor barks out a startled laugh. "No, no. The rabbit told me about it. It's a contest of skill, of sorts. Whoever dances the poorest gets removed until one champion remains. Though there's a card game called 'strip poker' where the goal is to win your opponents' clothes."

She chuckles softly at the look on Thor's face. "I was taught, but I don't think I ever took advantage of the skill. I always stayed awake and let the others with me rest." Or insisted they all stop for the night to rest before rising early and riding out on fresh horses. It depended on the circumstances.

Her head tilts slightly to one side as she listens to him explain the two concepts, her cheeks darkening at that last bit of information. Ah, that explains a few conversations she's overheard in various parts of the Nexus now...

"A contest like that would be very subjective, would it not?" She's going to ask about the dancing to avoid talking about people taking their clothes off together. Amelia doesn't have the right life experiences to keep talking about something like that. "If it was simply a matter of who could dance the longest that would be an entirely different matter, but unless the judge of this contest chose a certain style of dancing, I can't see this being fair." Not that a contest has to be fair, but this seems like something that should have fair rules?

He chuckles at that. "Yeah, that'd be the smart thing to do." But he'd been young and arrogant then, self-assured of his own immortality, as many youths are. Who would dare attack a prince of Asgard? And even if they did, surely they'd be within his power to handle.

Thor can only shrug at her criticism, quite with her on being baffled by it. "I'm not sure it is. And whoever dances for the longest might be more tired by the end, right?" He shakes his head. Humans are weird, Amelia.

"Someone always has to keep watch, but there's nothing wrong with being the person who rests from time to time." Amelia's simply never been one to allow herself the chance to be one of those people. Perhaps someday, she will, but the circumstances will have to be right for it.

They really are. The rogue's lips press into a thin line and then she shrugs as well. "Perhaps they need contests like this because they're not taught to dance well enough, or they're not taught the right dances. I've heard some say they had never been taught a single dance until they arrived in the Nexus." A strange thought, given its normality in the society Amelia grew up in. She shrugs again as she looks up at Thor. "Maybe they simply didn't get the right kind of education, so they try to prove themselves better through subjective contests with rigged scoring systems."

...that's how she'd do it, anyway.

There's a chance she might be joking, but Thor gives it some consideration anyway. "I don't know," he says absently, thoughtfully. "What are they teaching children in these schools of theirs? I'll ask young Peter next time I see him." If nothing else, it might be something more pleasant to talk about than... well, the obvious.

He shrugs, and scratches at his chin. "Either way, I don't think your dance partners should try to compete. They'd be the first to fall."

She sighs in agreement. If he's been watching at all, Thor will understand why the sound is so dramatic. "My partners have been rather lacking this evening, one of the grooms excepted. I've rarely danced with anyone who could keep up with me for any length of time." Those that have managed tend to have an unfair advantage or come from a place where dancing like this is the norm.

That thought begs a question that's been on her mind for a few minutes now. "Are you up to showing off your skills this evening? Or will I have to wait for Jól in Asvera to have a chance for that?" She's assuming she would be invited to festivities, which could be a grave assumption to be making, but she's hoping it won't be an imposition. She'll even have a proper gift for Thor this time if she is allowed to join in!

If it's a drastic assumption to make, Thor is making it as well, given how little he reacts to her (perhaps) forward statement. Yule is a time for celebrating the turning of the Wheel with friends, and he has so very few left. Anyone still surviving is welcome in Asvera, Yule or not.

Dancing today, however? He gives her a mildly nervous smile, but doesn't shy away from the possibility. "I could be persuaded. But I think we need to get something faster out of the band, don't you?" He knows perfectly well how to dance in formal, slow styles as would be seen at diplomatic events, but this is a party. And parties are for drumbeats and dancing hard enough you have to stop for breath.

"Faster?" The corner of Amelia's lips tug into a smirk. "I think I can manage that."

Getting to her feet, the rogue claps her hands together to get the attention of the bards. They all continue playing their own various tunes as loudly as they can until she points to a single lute player and nods. The man, excited about his particular tune being chosen, skips in front of the remainder of the bards and clears his throat as loud as he can to get them all to fall in line. It takes a few tries, but eventually they manage to pull together to play something much more lively than their previous collaborative works.

Pleased with her work, Amelia turns back to Thor and holds out her hand to him. "Fast enough? Or shall we ask them to pick up the pace more for us?"

By now he knows that look on her face. A challenge has been given, and by the Norns, she’s about to meet it. Part of Thor wonders if perhaps he’s made a mistake, but that’s just nerves talking. Surely he can handle a dance.

The tune is unfamiliar, but the sound of it reminds him of some old Earth music he’d heard back in his youth, and it puts a small nostalgic smile on his face as he takes in the beat, accepting her hand without hesitation as he gets to his feet. “I can manage this.”

He’s often been a man used to taking the lead, but unfamiliar as he is with this style of dance, he watches her and their fellow dancers before he begins. Hesitantly at first, stops and starts, but by the time the song is entering its second verse he’s moving with growing confidence.

Thor being unfamiliar with the music or the dance doesn't seem to change Amelia's enjoyment of dancing with her friend. There's some spinning and footwork involved, but all the dancers at this point are so exhausted or intoxicated that none seem to care or notice when they're laughing their way through a section of the dance rather than performing it correctly. Amelia weaves her way through the dance with her eyes only on Thor, reaching out to take his hand when partnered sections come about to make sure no one else gets between her and her partner.

"You're a natural, once you've learned the steps," she praises as the second verse comes to a close. She grins up at him, but allows him to take and keep the lead now that he's found his rhythm. "I'm going to have a lot to learn if there's any dancing in Asvera for Yule." A worthy challenge, if ever there were one for the rogue.

Once, he would've laughed off compliments such as that, unneeded to bolster his overinflated ego and telling him nothing he didn't already assume about himself. These days, that sort of reassurance is a soothing balm to anxious aches that refuse to fully fade, propping up his confidence if he begins to falter. He smiles at her as he leads her through the next steps, a glimpse of his old boldness shining through for a moment.

"Oh there will be. Not sure where we'll do it, but Yule's not Yule without dancing by the fire." There's a lot of work ahead of him to finish the preparations for the holiday, and the thought of it makes him recoil from the responsibility. But he is the king, and it will be good for the people to celebrate the first turning of the Wheel in their new home, sharing their good fortune with their new neighbors. It will be worth it, he tells himself.

"I can show you some now, if you like," he says instead, forcing himself not to give in to the melancholy that's creeping up on him. It's easier these days, Eir's potion fighting back the worst of it for him.

It's nice to see Thor letting down the sadness that lingers about him all the time while they dance. Amelia knows such overwhelming weight will return after a time, but for now they can enjoy themselves without thinking or worrying about anything else. Thor can lead for as long as he wants - which will definitely be at least one more dance when he offers to show the rogue what she can expect for Yule.

"Please. I'd be delighted to learn now so I don't look a complete fool when we dance in Asvera." She smiles brightly at her friend and gives his hand a tight squeeze, offering what assurance she can in the ways Adia and Harley have shown her. "Take pity on me when I mess up the steps," she laughs, "and forgive me if I manage to step on your toes."

He laughs a little. "My toes can take it. And if not, I know a guy." He doesn't imagine Hephaestus would be very impressed if he came limping back to the forge in need of godly prosthetic toes, of course, but fortunately he shouldn't have any need whatsoever to test this theory.

If Amelia is familiar at all with ballroom dancing, the first dance that Thor leads her through might remind her somewhat of it. Specific steps, a gentle tempo, partners revolving around a central point. It's the sort of dance that one might expect to be able to have a private conversation during, despite being on a dance floor with perhaps dozens of other couples, something courtly and downright civilized.

The second dance, not so much. This one is clearly how Asgardians prefer to party, more fluid and less rigid in pattern and pace, and open to more improvisation, closer to the spirited tribalesque dance that they shared before. It's the sort of dance that makes your hair whip off your shoulders, something that needs a bold and steady drum beat to sync one's own heart to.

She laughs brightly at the joke, but quickly falls silent as she does her best to pick up the new dances. The first is easy for her. Between the ballroom dances she's learned in the Nexus and the more formal dancing from her own world, the steps feel all but familiar by the time they've run through the pattern once. Amelia smiles as she follows Thor's lead, her eyes focused always on her partner save for those few moments they part for turns or passes through other couples.

It's the second dance that truly challenges the rogue. For all she's learned from people like Harley, letting loose while she's dancing is something Amelia struggles with. She appreciates the steady beat, but her body and feet inevitably fall into patterns that don't match up with the energy of the dance. She pushes through her discomfort, but her entire body is tense by the time the music and dance end. She hides it with a slight exaggerated breaths and a warm smile, but her posture is a little too good for someone whose body language suggests she's tired from the dancing.

"The two dances are so different from each other," she comments, breathless more from her anxiety than the dancing. "I'll have to practice them both before Yule comes so I don't look too out of place."

Thor notices her discomfort, though he's not really sure what its cause is. He certainly doesn't seem to be judging her skill, if that helps at all. His own smile is broad and warm, giving her a friendly pat to her shoulder. "That's the sort of dance that usually comes after everyone's had a few too many cups," he tells her with a chuckle. "I'm sure you'll do fine."

The easy acceptance and gentle touch to her shoulder make Amelia's smile more genuine. As terrible as she is about being touched, friends as good as Thor have somehow made it pleasant for her.

"Good, then no one will notice I'm still learning," she laughs. "I look forward to being a part of the celebration. If there's anything I can bring or do to help, please let me know." There will be gifts either way, but at least with an offer like this, the rogue won't feel quite so out of place when she arrives with full arms and bags.

The generosity of the people Thor has met in the Nexus will never cease to amaze him. If there is anyone Asgard owes more than anyone else, it's this place. And after being given so much already, being offered still more? No conquering race could ever hope to match such a tribute.

"You don't need to bring anything more than yourself," he says, but neither does he turn her down. "But if you want to bring more chocolates, or some other treats to share, I'm sure the children wouldn't mind."

Amelia smiles brightly at the suggestion. "I'm not certain I can match the treats offered here tonight, but I'll certainly bring a few of my favorite chocolates to share."

And some clothes from Alex for the children. And some fresh vegetable seeds she found for the greenhouse. ...and probably a box of small toys of some sort for the youngest Asgardians to divide amongst themselves. She's grown very fond of Asvera and its people and that limits the rogue's ability to be practical when it comes to the amount of gifts she buys for those she cares about. Besides, they're going to let her come celebrate with them and she has a lot more money than she'll ever be able to spend; Why shouldn't she spend it in this way? There is no reason and Amelia will reject any offer of one.

Now that they've stepped off the dance floor, the bards have started up again with their clamoring as they fight over what music to play next. Amelia realizes now she's taken up much of Thor's time, but she has a feeling the man is as easygoing about it as she is. "Thank you for the dances, my friend." She takes Thor's hands in her own for a moment to give them a gentle squeeze and smiles up at him. "Save a few for me on Yule, all right? I want everyone to be jealous of me for my partner that night."

These days, Thor can think of no better way to fill his time than by spending it with friends. It's not always possible, so he treasures those moments when they arrive, and feels no great pressure to find something more important to do with his time. What else could there be, anyway?

"You're very welcome, my lady." He squeezes her hands in return, and smiles at her, glad for both the dance and the company. "I'll look forward to seeing you there."
