A Very Nexus Reception

To all the friends of the happy grooms, PINpoint messages have already been sent weeks ago inviting them to expect quite the street party arranged in the commons of the Nexus. Guests have been invited to bring an appetite--both for food and for a social adventure. Nirnish weddings are public affairs, after all. While the ceremony has had to be somewhat sequestered for the sake of keeping the existence of Other Worlds a secret, neither Felix nor Jim would want to leave out their interdimensional friends entirely. Having a reception party arranged in the Nexus became the natural plan of action.
Overnight large sections of the Commons are transformed via diligent craftsmanship and quite a lot of magic from those who’ve volunteered. Lanterns representing the Divines are hung along every lamp post, bringing at least the idea of warmth even if the flames are too small to heat their surroundings alone. Bardic tunes carry in the air as readily as the scent of food and drink. Past banners of red and black, blue and white the people gather.
For both grooms this is nearly a continuation of the day before. They’ve had the chance to sleep off the nerves of their ceremony. Today is entirely for celebration--uninhibited celebration at that. No more minding what is said and isn’t. No more pretending to be anything other than who they are. Jim’s traded out his Nirnish finery for a suit and tie, garments he’s much more familiar with. Felix is staying with his native clothing; though he may have dressed down a little from his wedding clothes, the conjurer’s dressed in fitted breeches and his best fur-trimmed coat and boots, the soft hide dyed blue to match his tunic. By their side sits the conjurer’s spectral wolf familiar, ears pricked at the gathering.
As the guests find their ways over it will be easy to spot their friends amidst all the decor along with many other avenues with which to enjoy themselves….

Date: 2019-12-15 06:05 pm (UTC)And oh, there's a familiar face. "Amelia," he calls out with a smile, waving his prosthetic hand at her. "You dance like you fight." That's a compliment, of course.

Date: 2019-12-15 06:27 pm (UTC)"Thank you, that's very gracious." She takes a seat next to him and removes her cloak with a relieved exhale. It's definitely time to cool off a bit. "Do I get this compliment from another warrior with dancing prowess? Or from someone who simply appreciates a fine dancer?" Despite her teasing tone, it's a completely earnest question. She's heard many tales of Thor's skills on the field of battle, and a compliment like this one makes her wonder how rounded his skill set is.

Date: 2019-12-20 01:34 am (UTC)When was the last time he had reason to dance? Certainly not during his time with the Avengers, though he'd attended parties in Stark Tower. Those were more about drinking and socializing than dancing, which he was also good at, of course. Maybe twenty years back, at the victory celebration after the battle of Harokin? "It's been a while," he says at last, rubbing at his bearded chin.

It might take a few stretches and a few tries to find it again, but I believe you could show up some of the poor fools I've been stepping over easily."
Grinning, she motions to a group of young men speaking to each other in hushed tones by the group of bards. Several of them have removed their shoes to rub at their feet and a few are gesturing wildly as they talk to one another about their attempts to dance with the rogue. To call them hapless wouldn't be wrong, given their various states of frustration. Amelia seems rather proud of herself as she leans back on her hands and exhales a content sigh.
"Really, you'd think Felix's countrymen would be better equipped to handle someone with spirit like mine." She laughs at her own joke and smiles up at Thor. "I feel like I can't be blamed for their current state nearly as much as they might like to think."

Date: 2019-12-22 04:17 pm (UTC)He follows her gaze, though, and grins at the sight of men who look a bit danced out. “Of course not. They don’t look like they’d last in a ‘dance-off’.” He pronounces that like it’s a concept he’s still not entirely familiar with.

Date: 2019-12-23 01:39 am (UTC)Thor says it better than she would, considering it's a brand new concept to her. "Dance off? Are they about to dance out of their clothes? Or at least out of their shoes?" That's certainly not the kind of question someone who's familiar with sex would ask, but that doesn't describe Amelia so here they are.

Date: 2019-12-27 01:09 am (UTC)Of course.
Surprised, Thor barks out a startled laugh. "No, no. The rabbit told me about it. It's a contest of skill, of sorts. Whoever dances the poorest gets removed until one champion remains. Though there's a card game called 'strip poker' where the goal is to win your opponents' clothes."
no subject
Date: 2019-12-27 02:46 am (UTC)Her head tilts slightly to one side as she listens to him explain the two concepts, her cheeks darkening at that last bit of information. Ah, that explains a few conversations she's overheard in various parts of the Nexus now...
"A contest like that would be very subjective, would it not?" She's going to ask about the dancing to avoid talking about people taking their clothes off together. Amelia doesn't have the right life experiences to keep talking about something like that. "If it was simply a matter of who could dance the longest that would be an entirely different matter, but unless the judge of this contest chose a certain style of dancing, I can't see this being fair." Not that a contest has to be fair, but this seems like something that should have fair rules?

Date: 2019-12-29 09:38 pm (UTC)Thor can only shrug at her criticism, quite with her on being baffled by it. "I'm not sure it is. And whoever dances for the longest might be more tired by the end, right?" He shakes his head. Humans are weird, Amelia.

Date: 2020-01-03 09:31 pm (UTC)They really are. The rogue's lips press into a thin line and then she shrugs as well. "Perhaps they need contests like this because they're not taught to dance well enough, or they're not taught the right dances. I've heard some say they had never been taught a single dance until they arrived in the Nexus." A strange thought, given its normality in the society Amelia grew up in. She shrugs again as she looks up at Thor. "Maybe they simply didn't get the right kind of education, so they try to prove themselves better through subjective contests with rigged scoring systems."
...that's how she'd do it, anyway.

Date: 2020-01-05 02:35 am (UTC)He shrugs, and scratches at his chin. "Either way, I don't think your dance partners should try to compete. They'd be the first to fall."
no subject
Date: 2020-01-09 03:27 am (UTC)That thought begs a question that's been on her mind for a few minutes now. "Are you up to showing off your skills this evening? Or will I have to wait for Jól in Asvera to have a chance for that?" She's assuming she would be invited to festivities, which could be a grave assumption to be making, but she's hoping it won't be an imposition. She'll even have a proper gift for Thor this time if she is allowed to join in!

Date: 2020-01-10 01:27 am (UTC)Dancing today, however? He gives her a mildly nervous smile, but doesn't shy away from the possibility. "I could be persuaded. But I think we need to get something faster out of the band, don't you?" He knows perfectly well how to dance in formal, slow styles as would be seen at diplomatic events, but this is a party. And parties are for drumbeats and dancing hard enough you have to stop for breath.

Date: 2020-01-12 03:44 am (UTC)Getting to her feet, the rogue claps her hands together to get the attention of the bards. They all continue playing their own various tunes as loudly as they can until she points to a single lute player and nods. The man, excited about his particular tune being chosen, skips in front of the remainder of the bards and clears his throat as loud as he can to get them all to fall in line. It takes a few tries, but eventually they manage to pull together to play something much more lively than their previous collaborative works.
Pleased with her work, Amelia turns back to Thor and holds out her hand to him. "Fast enough? Or shall we ask them to pick up the pace more for us?"

Date: 2020-01-13 08:15 pm (UTC)The tune is unfamiliar, but the sound of it reminds him of some old Earth music he’d heard back in his youth, and it puts a small nostalgic smile on his face as he takes in the beat, accepting her hand without hesitation as he gets to his feet. “I can manage this.”
He’s often been a man used to taking the lead, but unfamiliar as he is with this style of dance, he watches her and their fellow dancers before he begins. Hesitantly at first, stops and starts, but by the time the song is entering its second verse he’s moving with growing confidence.

Date: 2020-01-18 04:33 pm (UTC)"You're a natural, once you've learned the steps," she praises as the second verse comes to a close. She grins up at him, but allows him to take and keep the lead now that he's found his rhythm. "I'm going to have a lot to learn if there's any dancing in Asvera for Yule." A worthy challenge, if ever there were one for the rogue.
no subject
Date: 2020-01-21 03:36 pm (UTC)"Oh there will be. Not sure where we'll do it, but Yule's not Yule without dancing by the fire." There's a lot of work ahead of him to finish the preparations for the holiday, and the thought of it makes him recoil from the responsibility. But he is the king, and it will be good for the people to celebrate the first turning of the Wheel in their new home, sharing their good fortune with their new neighbors. It will be worth it, he tells himself.
"I can show you some now, if you like," he says instead, forcing himself not to give in to the melancholy that's creeping up on him. It's easier these days, Eir's potion fighting back the worst of it for him.

Date: 2020-01-24 02:43 am (UTC)"Please. I'd be delighted to learn now so I don't look a complete fool when we dance in Asvera." She smiles brightly at her friend and gives his hand a tight squeeze, offering what assurance she can in the ways Adia and Harley have shown her. "Take pity on me when I mess up the steps," she laughs, "and forgive me if I manage to step on your toes."

Date: 2020-01-26 03:38 am (UTC)If Amelia is familiar at all with ballroom dancing, the first dance that Thor leads her through might remind her somewhat of it. Specific steps, a gentle tempo, partners revolving around a central point. It's the sort of dance that one might expect to be able to have a private conversation during, despite being on a dance floor with perhaps dozens of other couples, something courtly and downright civilized.
The second dance, not so much. This one is clearly how Asgardians prefer to party, more fluid and less rigid in pattern and pace, and open to more improvisation, closer to the spirited tribalesque dance that they shared before. It's the sort of dance that makes your hair whip off your shoulders, something that needs a bold and steady drum beat to sync one's own heart to.

Date: 2020-01-30 10:49 pm (UTC)It's the second dance that truly challenges the rogue. For all she's learned from people like Harley, letting loose while she's dancing is something Amelia struggles with. She appreciates the steady beat, but her body and feet inevitably fall into patterns that don't match up with the energy of the dance. She pushes through her discomfort, but her entire body is tense by the time the music and dance end. She hides it with a slight exaggerated breaths and a warm smile, but her posture is a little too good for someone whose body language suggests she's tired from the dancing.
"The two dances are so different from each other," she comments, breathless more from her anxiety than the dancing. "I'll have to practice them both before Yule comes so I don't look too out of place."

Date: 2020-02-05 10:59 pm (UTC)"Good, then no one will notice I'm still learning," she laughs. "I look forward to being a part of the celebration. If there's anything I can bring or do to help, please let me know." There will be gifts either way, but at least with an offer like this, the rogue won't feel quite so out of place when she arrives with full arms and bags.
no subject
Date: 2020-02-08 01:42 am (UTC)"You don't need to bring anything more than yourself," he says, but neither does he turn her down. "But if you want to bring more chocolates, or some other treats to share, I'm sure the children wouldn't mind."
no subject
Date: 2020-02-09 03:49 am (UTC)And some clothes from Alex for the children. And some fresh vegetable seeds she found for the greenhouse. ...and probably a box of small toys of some sort for the youngest Asgardians to divide amongst themselves. She's grown very fond of Asvera and its people and that limits the rogue's ability to be practical when it comes to the amount of gifts she buys for those she cares about. Besides, they're going to let her come celebrate with them and she has a lot more money than she'll ever be able to spend; Why shouldn't she spend it in this way?
There is no reason and Amelia will reject any offer of one.Now that they've stepped off the dance floor, the bards have started up again with their clamoring as they fight over what music to play next. Amelia realizes now she's taken up much of Thor's time, but she has a feeling the man is as easygoing about it as she is. "Thank you for the dances, my friend." She takes Thor's hands in her own for a moment to give them a gentle squeeze and smiles up at him. "Save a few for me on Yule, all right? I want everyone to be jealous of me for my partner that night."

Date: 2020-02-11 01:18 am (UTC)"You're very welcome, my lady." He squeezes her hands in return, and smiles at her, glad for both the dance and the company. "I'll look forward to seeing you there."
